Mochica

We got back from our 5 days trip to the North (Trujillo and Chiclayo) where we visited a lot of pre-Inka spots. There is the impressive ChanChan town (see last post) built by the Chimú people who lived aprox. 1100 to 1470 AC. But I think I´m even more impressed by the Mochica culture (100 BC to 800 AC). Rich pottery showing e.g. all sorts of sexual practices, big necklaces made out of pearls, gold and silver, beautiful textiles, huge pyramides,… At that time, in Europe we still lived in caves!

Wir sind von unserem 5 Tages Trip in den Norden zurück. Ich hab mich von meinem Kulturschock erholt. Ich finde es lustig, hier so gross zu sein mit meinen 1,60m, die Peruanerinnen sind kleiner als ich und auch einige Männer überrage ich! Ausser in einem Hotel an der Küste bin ich noch auf keine europäisch aussehenden Menschen getroffen, entsprechend ziehe ich manchmal diskret-neugierige Blicke auf mich unter all den schwarzhaarigen, dunkelhäutigen Peruanern.

Im wenig(er) touristischen Norden haben wir vor allem Prä-Inka-Kultur-Orte besucht: Ruinen von Pyramiden, Ausgrabungsstätten, Museen…

Es zeigt mit moderner Museumsdidaktik die spektakulären Ausgrabungsfunde des “Señor de Sipán” und anderer reich mit Keramiken, Gold und Silber gefüllten Mochica-Gräber.

Dabei beeindruckte mich vor allem die Mochica (oder auch Moche)-Kultur (ca. 100 v.Chr. bis 800 n.Chr.): während wir in Europa wahrscheinlich noch in Höhlen hausten, bauten sie bauten riesige Pyramiden aus Lehm, fertigten Schmuckstücke aus Perlen, Gold und Silber, wunderschöne Stoffe und Keramiken die unter anderem diverse sexuelle Praktiken und sogar Krankheiten zeigten.

Am Strand in der Nähe von Chiclayo. Traditionnelle Boote die noch heute zum fischen benutzt werden. Der Fischer “reitet” dabei auf dem Boot und paddelt mit den Händen und Füssen.

Where we stayed and what we did in the north – for those who want to do the trip or are just really curious:

- we actually stayed in Huanchaco, a small costal town near Trujillo, with hotels close to the beaches. Hotel La Plaza (calm, friedly staff, free internet and wifi).

-Chan Chan is between Huanchaco and Trujillo. Definetely worth visiting! Big mud town built by the Chimú people.

- Huaca de la Esmeralda (also called Rainbow Huaca), sacred place of the Chimú. Included in the Chan Chan entrance fee, but in some kilometers of distance (take a taxi). Worth visiting.

- Huaca … another sacred Chimú place near Trujillo. If you do the other Huaca and ChanChan, you can skip it.

- Huaca de la luna y del sol, two big Chimú pyramides near Trujillo. You can visit Huaca de la Luna, a guide is included in the entrance fee. Really worth visiting.

- Trujillo has a nice city center (plaza de armas) with a some of the buildings in the imperial style open for visiting (for free). Trujillo is a good place to buy shoes and other leather stuff in Peru.

- Chiclayo: the town itself is not really worth visiting. We stayed outside, in Lambayeque, where the museums are, in the Hotel Real Sipan, just beside the Brüning Museum (friendly staff, we had a room to the street so not really calm)

- We went to the Pyramides (huacas) where the Senor de Sipan was found. I guess it´s not worth the long Microbus Trip.

- Museo Tumbas Reales de Sipan: spectacular museum definitely worth visiting! Unfortunately, the explanationary texts are only in spanish, next time I´ll take a guided tour.

- Pimentel near Chiclayo has nice beaches where I shot the boat photos.
